Swing free

 

This summer we have spend much of the sunny afternoons on the swing and I highly recommend it.  I had not been on a swing for years and swinging with my daughter has been blissful.  Its hard to think about much of anything while swinging especially with Presley shouting "hello's" to imaginary monsters, snakes and robots.  

Today I was watching Presley and her summer cousins have a picnic in the backyard, swing and fly kites.  Watching them play the same childhood games I use to play gave me an energy I haven't felt since my childhood.  There is a certain energy that being around children playing gives you...  Having Presley has help to connect me back to the child I use to be.  Blissful may sound like a silly word but all I know is when I'm swinging (with Presley), there is no other place I'd rather be.

Summer Service

 

I was in the bucket- 100 feet in the air- gulp!

In my Call to Service post I urged my readers to commit to a summer service project.  I am please to say I have finally started the work on my service project.  I am volunteering my photography services to the the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership (TMSP).  It is a not-for-profit organization working towards the revitalization of downtown Ticondeoga, NY.  

Over the weekend TMSP held the annual Waterfest in Ticonderoga.  We had plans of going and now we had plans of taking photos for TMSP...  I'm learning that taking photos for this purpose is different then the photography I'm accustom to doing.  It's been another great learning exercise and with the help of the Ticonderoga Fire Department (thank you kindly) I was able to take aerial photos of Montcalm Street.  I've never had such a large subject to work with!   

This service project has been so rewarding for me.  I have met more people in the community, got involved and given back to the community that I adore.  I realize that (stop me if you heard this before) that all the things I want to see in our community start with me.

Chalk- don't leave home without it

I promise behind all that hair is a sweet face.

This summer we have had some strange weather, I woke up and it was raining.  Later in the morning the sun was not out but the temperature was good and we needed out of the house.  My knee is still hurting from last week so a run was out of the question.  Instead we went for a walk to the park at the end of Main Street.

Presley loves the water fountain, no not a decorative fountain a drinking fountain.  She had never used one so it's extremely exciting.  It is a courteously running fountain which makes it all the more enjoyable.  After some time there we moved on to the play area (don't worry I won't add any boring details).

Presley packed the chalk, which was a great idea.  We sat in the shade and drew rainbows, hearts, circles and suns.  As you can see my Teddy Bear drew on her feet and traced her feet, she was very proud of both.

Main Street

Most of the day was cold and rainy.  My finger tips were actually numb for most of the morning (remember I'm from the desert).  Late this afternoon the sun came out, and we went for a stroll.  I had been wanting to photograph Main Street, it's very different from the Main Street in Tempe, AZ...

I only took a few photos, I plan on photographing more of Main Street early in the morning so I don't have to photoshop the cars out (like I did above)...  One thing that my photography has done for me is made me pay more attention to detail.  Now when I see something beautiful I try to figure out how it would photograph best (in my opinion).

Past and Present

July 14th, 2008

This morning we had our running Tuesday morning date planned with an elderly neighbor from our home on Amherst.  She's in her late 70's and always has a lot to talk about.  Presley started calling her Grandma during our last visit, she seems to enjoy her.

  After sometime there we said goodbye and on our walk home stopped by the school.  There we watched the "scoop" (backhoe) excavating for a new building going up (next to the beautiful High School build in the 1800's).  Presley loves to watch the scoop, I find it interesting but she could stay for hours.  We watched for a bit and then I distracted her with the idea that there were some dandelions just a head.

Along the way we saw Presley's friend Sophia outside her house with her babysitter.  Sophia asked if Presley could play so we did.  Sophia is going to be four (I think) and too cute for words.  Presley wants to play with Sophia's toys but not so much with Sophia something this charming little girl can't quite figure out...  Ok I'm rambling...

I just found our little morning walk and date fascinating, the mixture of young and old, things that were and things to be...  I feel I'm in flux, not really in or out of either state (am I middle aged?). 

The photo above is from last summer...  It was raining then too (it's rained all afternoon and still raining).

My Head is in the Clouds

Being here so close to nature I rarely think about anything other then my Bugga Bugga and the beauty around me.  I'm pretty disconnected with a lot of the stuff that normally consumes me, which makes it hard to come up with new topics.  I have to say I feel guilty that my quality of posts has gone down since being on summer vacation.  Most of my time (here) is spent with my daughter and making sure she has a great summer (I of course have a blast too).  This amazing place allows for me to take plenty of photos that I am excited to share.  I hope that my short but consistent posts are at least fun to look at.

Do I have any sand on me?

This photo pretty much sums up my day.  Presley went to bed (last night) a couple hours late and woke up a few hours early- ugh.  I had hoped for a long nap today but that didn't happen either.  I'm really hoping for a normal night today but I'm not holding my breath.

We went to the beach late this afternoon...  She was literally eating mouthfuls of sand and rocks.  I considered washing her mouth out in the lake water.  I didn't for fear of looking nuts, I went with washing her mouth out with a beach towel...  Is it bad to squirt a water from a water bottle in her mouth?...  We have all summer to work this out.

Today I had some luck, I went out set to take a few landscape photos and I'm pleased.  The sky looked amazing, I feel so lucky.  I was a little frustrated the other day but I went out today for more photos and I got a few I liked.  

I did come to realize that after a landscape photo session I will only have a few photos I like unlike a portrait session (where I have 25-30).  I needed to shift my thinking more then anything.

Blandscapes

Here a few photos I took today and I've decided landscapes are not my favorite to photograph.  It's not because I don't like them its because I can't do them well.  After an afternoon of photographing landscapes I just sort of lose interest...  

I think this means I just need to take more...  I assume I will get the hang of it.  Right now I'm surrounded by beauty, if I can't take good photos here, I'm in trouble.

Flowers and Clouds

I took the first few photos while on a jog this morning (and pushed Presley in a stroller).  The weather was perfect, I of course had my camera and got lucky with a few photos.  I was worried Presley would not be willing to stand in this field.  I was wrong, she was having such a good time picking flowers it actually scared me (snakes). 

 After a morning like this I decided I had to take Presley to the beach today and get a few sunny beach photos.  Well of course I have this cloud following me around!  The sunny day was not to be, by the time Presley woke up from her nap the clouds came to hang out.  

It never rained it was just overcast, I decided to go to the beach anyway.  We went, it didn't workout very well.  Presley (again) was more interested in eating sand, throwing sand and didn't want anything to do with the water.  We stayed about 30 minutes.  I still had fun and got a few sweet photos of my Teddy Bear.  

I'm sure after a few more visits to the lake she will warm up to the water!
